Let’s be honest. When you first start building automations, your focus is on the happy path—making it work. But what happens when a workflow, chugging along happily at 3 AM, hits an unexpected snag? An API is down, a database field is null, or credentials expire. Without proper error handling, the workflow just… stops. Unlocking the ‘On Error’ Setting

Almost every n8n node has a Settings tab in its parameter view. Inside, you’ll find a dropdown called On Error. The default is Stop workflow execution. But if you change it to Continue (using error output), something magical happens.

  4. After the Slack node, you might add a Stop and Error node if you consider this a critical failure, or simply let that branch of the execution end.

Now, a single invalid record won’t stop the entire workflow run (especially if it’s processing items in a loop), and you’ll have a precise log of what went wrong.

Comparing the Patterns: Which Should You Use?

The answer is almost always: both. They serve different purposes and work beautifully together.
